Openai Exec leaves to start materials science

Liam Fedus, Openai’s VP of research for post-training, leaves the company a startup of material science ai.

The information initially reported Fedus’s plans. In a Statement on xFedus confirmed the report and added some additional details.

“My undergraduate student was in physics and I would like to apply this technology there,” Fedus said in the statement. “Because AI for science is one of the most strategic sites to reach openai and achievement (artificial super intelligence), Openai plans to invest in my new business and work together.”

Fedus’s firm will compete with Google Deepmind, Microsoft and others in the emerging AI material science space. In 2023, Deepmind claims that she AI system, gnome, Found crystals that could be used to produce new materials. More recently, Microsoft revealed some materials that uncovered AI instruments named Mattiergen and Mattersim.

However, some experts are skeptical that today’s AI is capable of making new scientific discoveries.
